Stampin' Up! Corporate Blog Post - Crafting With Kids

Hello, everyone! For those of you who are new to my blog, my name is Lauren Alarid. I’m a Stampin’ Up! demonstrator in California and 2019 Artisan Design Team member, and I am so happy to be sharing my creativity on the Stampin' Up! company blog. Today I wanted to talk a little bit about crafting with kids. One of my favorite ways to craft is with my 7-year old daughter. Seeing the joy it brings her, to be able to create and get her hands inky with me is always so memorable. In my experience, there are a few products and tools that make this a more successful and enjoyable process for both of us.

My number one choice for stamping with children is photopolymer stamps. They are clear which make stamp placement easy for them, and when there are multiple images to layer, photopolymer stamps make layering easier. For our cards today, you’ll notice that we used the Above The Clouds Bundle (151135). The balloon images offered so many possibilities for coloring, which my daughter loves.

Another great product to use when crafting with kiddos is the Blends Markers. My daughter loves to color with the blends. She can color stamped images as much as she likes without worrying about the paper pilling and the tips won’t get ruined as easily as other coloring tools, which makes these ideal for kids.

Along with the Blends, the Stampin’ Blends Color Lifter (144608) is also a useful tool for young crafters. As they color, if any gets outside the lines, they can easily use the lifter to remove any mistakes. It’s an absolute “must have”.

Punches are a supper fun and easy tool to use as well. The balloon bundle we used was perfect because the coordinating punch made it simple to punch out her colored balloon images and eliminated any frustrating fussy cutting for her. Plus, who doesn’t love punching out fun images?!

When it comes adhesives, I recommend the Multipurpose Liquid Glue (110755). I have found that the liquid glue makes it so much easier for kids to adhere layers and images. Because it doesn’t instantly and permanently stick the moment it is placed, they are able to adjust and maneuver their pieces before finalizing their placement, avoiding waste and frustration. Additionally, it is an inexpensive adhesive and lasts quite a while, which is always a win-win in my book.

One final tool that I find to be invaluable when crafting with children is the Take Your Pick (144107) tool. Even I struggle sometimes with placing tiny elements such as sequins and gems. The Take Your Pick tool is so helpful in giving kids (or anyone really) a way to effortlessly pick up and place their elements. I like to use the paper piercing end to hold the sequin/gem in place so that the tacky end of the tool will not stay attached to it after I adhere it. My daughter really enjoyed using this tool and found it very helpful. I see her reach for it often when crafting with me.

I wanted to include a final picture (below) with both my and my daughter’s cards (mine is on the left and hers is on the right). As I create my projects, I will show her how I do each step and have her copy what I do. That way she can easily follow along and feel successful. You can see how easily she was able to recreate my design with the help of these basic tools.

I hope that you have enjoyed these tips and will consider crafting with a child. Seeing the magic of stamping through their eyes is a completely enchanting experience. It may even be a great basis for a class! All supplies are listed below.
Happy Crafting!
